Love is Listening: Dementia documentary screening and talk

A special screening and Q&A session with international dementia expert Michael Verde

Monday 26 August 6.30pm & Tuesday 27 August 10.30am

Back by popular demand and as part of the Dementia Friendly Margaret River initiative Michael Verde (Dementia Expert ) returns to Margaret River for this special screening of his new documentary ‘Love is Listening: Dementia without Loneliness’ that teaches ways to tap into depths of memory that dementia does not erase.

Michael Verde is the founder of  Memory Bridge, an American non-profit organization that creates programs that connect people with Alzheimer’s disease to family, friends, and other people in their local community.

The documentary was produced in collaboration with world-renowned solo percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie. As part of the project, Dame Evelyn Glennie visited people living with dementia in two care homes in Bromley. The film documents how, using her extraordinary awareness of non-verbal communication, Evelyn was able to make an emotionally profound connection with a resident that many might consider to be beyond meaningful reach. It provides a new understanding of what it means to truly listen. Bringing globally recognised authorities in the arts, science and spiritual traditions together to reveal how dementia stigma can be removed and replaced with inspiring the community to support people with dementia.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session led by Michael Verde. Doors open half an hour prior to the start time.

Dementia is a day-to-day part of the fabric of our society, yet it is often ignored or misunderstood. It is a condition that affects people in very singular ways, so we need to ensure that all people affected by dementia are supported with a relevant and creative approach. Dame Evelyn Glennie

By connecting with people who are isolated by dementia, we gain much more than we might think. This film deserves real attention. Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits

Tickets: $10 per ticket (includes delicious refreshments after the screening)
