Fairy Queen – The Carnival (Exhibition)
Nic Duncan, Amber Launay, Susie Vickery
Friday, 13 September, 2024 @ 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
An exhibition of costumes made for Denmark Baroque’s production of the Fairy Queen showing the process of making through drawings, photographs and samples along with finished costumes and films.
September 13-October 3. Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm.
Exhibition Launch: Thursday, September 12, 6-8pm.
Artist Talk: Friday, September 13, 10am.
The costumes were made with community participation using only recycled garments. They carry an environmental message, but also inspire with their beauty, craft and whimsicality. Fairies wear patched and woven doublets, breeches and gowns made from the piles of cheap nylon garments discarded daily. Striped and patterned tights are made from old t-shirts. Elements of nature have been incorporated with gumnuts and leaves serving as buttons and decoration. High-vis vests have become doublets for Bottom and his crew, adorned with tools suitable for a Restoration tradie.
The aim is to show the making community and audience members how to look at their jetsam in a new light and realise what beauty can be reclaimed from discarded clothing.
Supported by Annie and Rodney Silberstein, The Farm Margaret River, Perth ProLab and Ilford.
