SUMMARY:Women & Art: Myths\, Legends and Goddesses (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Cassi-Jo Davis and Miranda FreeMarch 18 – April 24. Mon-Fri\, 10am-4pmArtist Talk: April 20\, 11.30am\n\n\n\nCassi-Jo Davis is a textile artist from Bridgetown whose work explores the feminine connection to nature through personal stories and challenges faced by historical and contemporary women. She is fascinated with ancient folklore stories and symbolism of the feminine throughout history and from different cultures. She is inspired by Religious & Spiritual Art\, Art Nouveau\, Japanese Art\, the Pre-Raphaelites and Figurative artists. Cassi creates layered\, richly coloured and textured works using antique and recycled textiles\, paint and embroidery to create wall and wearable art that speak to the viewer on a deeply felt level.  \n\n\n\nMiranda Free is a representational painter from Nannup who usually works in oils but has a deep interest in learning and experimenting with a variety of media. Launching into a body of work featuring legendary women and goddesses important to the arts\, she is inspired by the work of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh\, a member of the Art Nouveau group the ‘Glasgow Four’. Several of these works feature techniques pioneered by Mackintosh that involve using traditional gesso\, egg tempera and are embellished with semi-precious stones\, beads and shell. She is also including Art Nouveau inspired stained glass works and oil paintings typical of her usual practice\, in this exhibition. \n\n\n\nCassi’s and Miranda’s works resonate due to their shared inspirations and interest in highly patterned and floral surfaces. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:500 Days In The Wild (E)
DESCRIPTION:A Special Event Screening and Live Q&A with Director Dianne Whelan\n\n\n\nBar opens 60 minutes prior to screening\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n500 Days In The Wild follows the epic 6-year journey of filmmaker Dianne Whelan as she sets out to reconnect with nature and become the first person to travel the world’s longest trail.\n\n\n\nThe 24\,000 km Trans Canada Trail stretches across the continent of North America\, connecting the Atlantic\, Arctic and Pacific oceans. It is the longest trail in the world. For six years filmmaker Dianne Whelan traveled the entirety of the land and water trails\, the only person to ever accomplish this journey. 500 Days in the Wild recounts Dianne’s journey by bike\, canoe\, skis\, snowshoes and on foot and her cross-cultural visits with those who live close to the land. \n\n\n\nThis feature doc culled from 800 hours of footage is an intricate weave of adventure film\, personal reflection and stunning captures of wildlife and landscapes. Using humour\, adventure\, beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack (including songs from Joni Mitchell\, First Aid Kit\, Xavier Rudd\, and The Tragically Hip)\, 500 Days in the Wild will entertain audiences and inspire hope for the future. \n\n\n\nShe started out alone\, disillusioned with state of the world\, to look for different ways of caring for the land and for each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser\, more hopeful\, in love and with a passion to share this story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:CATALPA: Flight to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by THEATRE 180\n\n\n\nDoors will open 60 minutes prior to the event\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\nFAB Club\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nTHEATRE 180 in collaboration with WA Museum tells the incredible true story of the greatest prison break in Australian history: the escape of six Irish Fenians from the fortress of Fremantle Prison in 1876 on board the American whaleship CATALPA. \n\n\n\nKnown as a living tomb\, Fremantle Prison was a place of hellish imprisonment and far from the green fields of Ireland and the land of birth for these freedom fighters seeking independence from centuries of crippling British rule. \n\n\n\nTwo years in the planning\, involving espionage\, secret letters\, undercover operatives who travelled from Boston to Western Australia to enact the plan\, a love affair\, a rescue ship masquerading as a whaleboat\, a desperate boat chase and the threat of war against the might of America – this story has all the hallmarks of a major Hollywood movie and all the heart of an Irish ballad. \n\n\n\nWith its sprawling storyline\, cast of thousands and epic landscapes from the high seas to 19th century Western Australia\, CATALPA: Flight to Freedom is the latest in THEATRE 180’s successful and immersive CinePlay genre. \n\n\n\nThe daring and audacious CATALPA rescue is a dramatic and gripping tale of hope and adventure not to be missed! \n\n\n\nScriptwriter: Stuart Halusz and Myles PollardDirector: Stuart HaluszCast: Myles Pollard\, Tadhg Lawrence\, Taran KnightVisual Designer: Josephine Hayes – Gneiss DesignSound Designer & Programmer: Amaru ZachariassenSound Consultant: Ben CollinsLighting Designer: Aaron StirkCostume Designer: Ingrid ZurzoloTheme Song Composer: Craig SkeltonTheme Song Vocalists: Tadhg LawrenceTheme Song Musicians: Ian Simpson\, Guitar/Banjo; Phil Waldron\, Bazouki; John Clare\, Bodhran; Chris Gibbs\, Electric Guitar; Josephine Hayes\, Fiddle; Fiona Doyle\, Irish Whistle; Craig Skelton\, Bass Guitar; Elliot Jebb\, DrumsStage Manager: Craig WilliamsAssistant Stage Manager: Aaron Stirk \n\n\n\nThe show will be followed by a Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAB Club\n\n\n\nFABClub is a simple idea: premium theatre seats reserved for people who attend alone. DESCRIPTION:Donations Welcome\n\n\n\nSign up to Young@HEART eNewsletter\n\n\n\nMusic\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are a group of friends who have come together to sing for the joy of it. Our talented guitarists\, ukulele players\, flautist and bass player\, accompany us as we sing.  \n\n\n\nOur repertoire is varied. We sing Blue Grass\, Gospel\, Pop\, Sea Shanties and folk songs. We are especially keen on singing in harmony. We tend to follow a jazzy tradition\, singing our various parts by ear\, as we do not use musical scores. We have been singing together for several years and grown into a strong and cohesive group. We perform for community groups when asked and do not ask for payment.  \n\n\n\nThursday is the day we all look forward to when we come together to practice at the Baptist Hall. Singing is a great way to meet friends\, develop new skills and contribute to the community. We hope to continue doing so for some time to come.  \n\n\n\nAbout Young@HEART\n\n\n\nThe Young@HEART music program is held at Margaret River HEART every Monday morning from 10am to 11am. The program does not run on public holidays or when there is another major event in the foyer. \n\n\n\nThe initiative was developed to safely encourage participation in the arts among older residents (over 60s) during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.  \n\n\n\nDue to high interest\, the free performances have since been opened to people of all ages. Nonetheless\, the senior demographic still makes up the majority of the audience. \n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nFoyer \n\n\n\nRun-Time\n\n\n\n60 minutes \n\n\n\nTicket Prices\n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

Stumbling across the ‘perfect wave\, two surfers start a chain reaction of events noone could have foreseen. \n\n\n\nThe true story of the first surf pioneers to find and surf ‘the point’ on Nias island\, and the dramatic consequences for them and the people and place. we travel through time and revisit the megalithic island\, taking a trip with the first surfers and the never before seen super 8 footage\, taking us on an unexpected journey through time and examining what happens when we discover ‘paradise’.  \n\n\n\nDirected by Rebecca Coley \n\n\n\n“I love it. Really clever and visually ravishing and tells a great story.” – BILL FINNEGAN (AUTHOR OF BARBARIAN DAYS) “Point of Change is thoroughly entertaining\, but also a social study that we can learn from. It’s a singular story\, and also a microcosm of so many of these surf tourism destinations…excellent. And that big swell!” – JAMIE BRISWICK (SOUNDINGS). “Visually\, Point of Change is punctuated by vibrant\, psychedelic animations … the grainy surf footage is sure to appeal to fans of the sport … the film succeeds in raising important questions about the consequences of westerners’ fascination with ‘exotic’ locations …”– HeyUGuys review ‘A beautiful\, gripping\, thought-provoking film’ THE GUARDIAN‘A powerful and unique film… an adventure which resonates well after you’ve seen it’BYRON BAY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ‘Incredible.. insightful and enlightening… A must watch’ LONDON SURF FILM FESTIVAL REVIEWS  \n\n\n\nThis event will conclude with a Q&A hosted by Chris Binns with Paul “Antman” Paterson on the panel in person and director Rebecca Coley via Zoom. Featuring music by trailblazers such as Melba Liston\, Mary Lou Williams\, and Toshiko Akiyoshi\, alongside contemporary voices including Kristin Berardi\, this program showcases the depth\, innovation\, and impact of women’s writing and artistry in big band music. \n\n\n\nThe West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra is joined by special guest artist Sue Bluck\, one of Australia’s most respected jazz pianists and vocalists\, educators\, and bandleaders. Sue’s involvement offers a rare opportunity for emerging musicians to work closely with a leading artist while bringing this dynamic repertoire to life on stage. \n\n\n\nBold\, swinging\, and deeply expressive\, Women & Big Band is both a celebration and a reframing\, honouring the women who have shaped big band jazz and amplifying the voices that continue to drive it forward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAB Club\n\n\n\nFABClub is a simple idea: premium theatre seats reserved for people who attend alone. DESCRIPTION:Donations Welcome\n\n\n\nSign up to Young@HEART eNewsletter\n\n\n\nMusic\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAsha Henfry (flute/vocals) & Kevin McDonald (guitar)\n\n\n\nAsha and Kevin are a South West–based duo brought together by a shared love of music that crosses genres and generations. Blending flute\, voice and guitar\, they create a sound that is simple\, expressive\, and deeply connected. \n\n\n\nTheir music draws on a wide range of influences—from jazz and Brazilian choro to well-known classics and unexpected favourites—shaped by years of performing both in Australia and overseas. Asha’s playing has taken her from Melbourne to Brazil\, Berlin and New York\, while Kevin’s career has included collaborations with artists such as Diana Krall\, James Taylor and Carole King. \n\n\n\nNow living and playing in the same corner of the world\, they come together in a way that feels relaxed and intuitive—letting the music unfold naturally\, with a focus on feel\, connection\, and good songs. \n\n\n\nAbout Young@HEART\n\n\n\nThe Young@HEART music program is held at Margaret River HEART every Monday morning from 10am to 11am. DESCRIPTION:Special Preview Screening and Virtual Q&A with Author Helen Macdonald\n\n\n\nKiosk opens 30 minutes prior to screening\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nWhen Helen’s beloved father passes away\, she is overtaken by grief and loses herself in memories of their time birding and exploring the natural world together. \n\n\n\nShe becomes obsessed with the idea of training her own goshawk\, and so she brings the fearsome bird Mabel home to Cambridge with her. Ready to embark on the arduous process of trying to train the wildest of animals\, Helen fills the freezer with hawk food and turns off her phone. But as she labors to teach Mabel how to hunt and fly free on her own\, Helen uncovers how neglected her own emotions and life have become. Based on a true story and a memoir of the same name\, H IS FOR HAWK is a soaring journey of the connection between people and nature\, and how it might be possible to reconcile loss through love. \n\n\n\nSpecial preview screening includes live virtual Q&A with author Helen Macdonald. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nArtzability Incorporated has been providing weekly artistic opportunities for people living with a disability in the Augusta Margaret River region for the past 17 years. \n\n\n\nOur focus is on creativity\, inclusion\, and community connection. \n\n\n\nThe Artzability: Living Stories – Voices of Resilience Book Launch will be a vibrant celebration of creativity\, courage\, and powerful storytelling\, showcasing the work of 11 talented local authors–all of whom live with disability. This inclusive and welcoming event invites the community to experience bold\, authentic stories shaped by lived experience—stories that challenge perceptions\, spark curiosity\, and leave a lasting impact. Each author offers a distinctive voice\, contributing to a rich and diverse collection that reflects the strength and imagination of our local creative community. \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to connect\, listen\, and be inspired. It aims not only to celebrate individual publications\, but also to ignite meaningful conversations around representation\, accessibility\, and the vital role of disabled voices in the arts. Through shared stories and community engagement\, the event encourages audiences to see the world through new perspectives. \n\n\n\nUltimately\, the Artzability: Voices of Resilience Book Launch is more than a celebration of locally written and illustrated books—it is a bold statement of inclusion\, creativity\, and community pride. This project affirms that diverse voices belong at the heart of storytelling and demonstrates how accessible\, inclusive events strengthen and enrich everyone involved. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project has been supported by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and Lotterywest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email
