SUMMARY:Women in Big Band
DESCRIPTION:A Playing WA Tour presented by Art Margaret River\, CircuitWest & WA Youth Jazz Orchestra\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\nFAB Club\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nBig band jazz has always been shaped by extraordinary women as composers\, arrangers\, instrumentalists\, and bandleaders\, even when their contributions haven’t always been given the spotlight.\n\n\n\nWomen & Big Band celebrates the powerful legacy and ongoing influence of women in large-ensemble jazz. Featuring music by trailblazers such as Melba Liston\, Mary Lou Williams\, and Toshiko Akiyoshi\, alongside contemporary voices including Kristin Berardi\, this program showcases the depth\, innovation\, and impact of women’s writing and artistry in big band music. \n\n\n\nThe West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra is joined by special guest artist Sue Bluck\, one of Australia’s most respected jazz pianists and vocalists\, educators\, and bandleaders. Sue’s involvement offers a rare opportunity for emerging musicians to work closely with a leading artist while bringing this dynamic repertoire to life on stage. \n\n\n\nBold\, swinging\, and deeply expressive\, Women & Big Band is both a celebration and a reframing\, honouring the women who have shaped big band jazz and amplifying the voices that continue to drive it forward. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAB Club\n\n\n\nFABClub is a simple idea: premium theatre seats reserved for people who attend alone. One seat per booking. No dating\, no events\, no obligations. Just great views\, great performances\, and the quiet confidence of belonging to an exclusive club for true arts lovers. Enter the code ‘FAB26’ to access a seat in Row G. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Josh Wells. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:Young@HEART - Asha Henfry & Kevin McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Donations Welcome\n\n\n\nSign up to Young@HEART eNewsletter\n\n\n\nMusic\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAsha Henfry (flute/vocals) & Kevin McDonald (guitar)\n\n\n\nAsha and Kevin are a South West–based duo brought together by a shared love of music that crosses genres and generations. Blending flute\, voice and guitar\, they create a sound that is simple\, expressive\, and deeply connected. \n\n\n\nTheir music draws on a wide range of influences—from jazz and Brazilian choro to well-known classics and unexpected favourites—shaped by years of performing both in Australia and overseas. Asha’s playing has taken her from Melbourne to Brazil\, Berlin and New York\, while Kevin’s career has included collaborations with artists such as Diana Krall\, James Taylor and Carole King. \n\n\n\nNow living and playing in the same corner of the world\, they come together in a way that feels relaxed and intuitive—letting the music unfold naturally\, with a focus on feel\, connection\, and good songs. \n\n\n\nAbout Young@HEART\n\n\n\nThe Young@HEART music program is held at Margaret River HEART every Monday morning from 10am to 11am. The program does not run on public holidays or when there is another major event in the foyer. \n\n\n\nThe initiative was developed to safely encourage participation in the arts among older residents (over 60s) during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.  \n\n\n\nDue to high interest\, the free performances have since been opened to people of all ages. Nonetheless\, the senior demographic still makes up the majority of the audience. \n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nFoyer \n\n\n\nRun-Time\n\n\n\n60 minutes \n\n\n\nTicket Prices\n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop\, Children’s Activities\, Studio Theatre\, Visual Arts\, Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:The Memory of Trees
DESCRIPTION:An Exhibition by Heloise Roberts & Moira FearbyMay 28 to June 26Exhibition Launch: Thursday\, June 4\, 6-8pm\n\n\n\nRoberts and Fearby met as teenagers at art school and have since developed a collaborative practice interrogating place\, identity\, and environmental consciousness. Their work has received several awards\, including the 2025 Ludlow Landscape Prize\, the 2013 Black Swan Heritage Prize for Living City\, and the Castaways Sculpture Award Sustainability Prize in 2021 and 2023 for Pathogen and Insidious respectively. They have been finalists in the Black Swan Portrait Prize (2014\, 2016) and the 2024 Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape with Echoes of Duality—Sugarloaf Rock. Most recently\, they were selected for Tracework\, a survey of contemporary art in the Southwest at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, they began a series of large-scale landscapes evoking memory and place. Crafted from drawn and painted plywood tiles\, these works imbue iconic views with nostalgia. Their modular construction allows for both cohesion and dissonance\, mirroring how collective and individual experiences of place diverge and merge. \n\n\n\nTheir work reimagines landscape as an active collaborator—shaping identity through memory\, materiality\, and movement. The exhibition\, The Memory of Trees\, traces these entangled geographies\, where place becomes a site of shared belonging that invites viewers to reflect on their own spatial narratives. This body of work extends their fascination with the natural landscape that has shaped them\, exploring how familiarity and distance shape memory. \n\n\n\nIn an era of climate anxiety\, The Memory of Trees\, offers an alternative mode of engagement with the natural world. These works do not shout or accuse; they ask viewers to remember what they love—and to consider\, quietly\, what it would mean to lose it. This is art as gentle witness. \n\n\n\nThe artists’ earlier work engaged more directly with environmental threat. Pathogen and Insidious confronted viewers with the slow\, creeping damage of ecological change. In The Memory of Trees\, they have turned toward what is precious\, what is worth protecting\, what is already being carried forward in memory. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSouth West Biennial 2026: Tracework is presented by Bunbury Regional Art Gallery in partnership with Arts Margaret River\, Nala Bardip Mia – Margaret River HEART and other participating venues across WA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrint\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email

SUMMARY:Head On Portrait Awards
DESCRIPTION:May 29-June 25. Mon-Fri\, 10am-4pm\n\n\n\nThe prestigious Head On Photo Awards celebrates the world’s best in photography\, illuminating the perspectives\, styles\, and forms that break new ground. We want to challenge emerging photographers to bring audiences new ways of seeing the world. Our dual aim is to ensure photographers are valued for their incredible creative contributions and to create a forum where exceptional images can be shared. \n\n\n\nThis is underpinned by Head On’s diverse and experienced curation team\, which actively seeks bold\, daring\, and exciting images. Our blind judging process\, where artists’ names are hidden\, ensures this work is done on an even playing field. \n\n\n\nEvery photo is judged on impact alone\, which reflects our unique curation philosophy. Head On believes that curation must consider both the seen and the unseen. Truly great photographs reveal a truth about our world without sacrificing the imagination. They allow you to dream of what it would be like to be on the ground when a photo was made and give you a fleeting glimpse into the life unfolding around the moment. \n\n\n\nThe Head On Portrait Awards (est. 2004) is a prestigious competition that recognizes the talents of portrait photographers at all career stages. Prizes are awarded to artists who demonstrate a unique visual literacy of portraiture and innovative approaches to the traditional portrait form\, expanding our idea of what a portrait can be. \n\n\n\nPosed or candid\, intimate or public\, dynamic or static\, these portraits explore the future of photography and the depths of the human condition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by @headonphotofest \n\n\n\nImages: Chrystal dé Louise\, Livia Peres\, Philip Gostelow\, Sally Griffiths\, Therese Maher\, Yannis Kontos.
