Young@HEART – Stringpickers

Monday, March 17 @ 10:00 AM 11:00 AM

Stringpickers

SONGS OF THE SOUTHWEST…AND BEYOND with featuring local musicians Alan Mann, Dave Mann, Phil Roeterdenk

The Stringpickers are surviving remnants of several famous bands of the last 40 years which played music from the Australian folk and country music scenes.  WABO or Western Australian Bush Orchestra played in the twentieth century; many songs were from the Eastern Australian folk tradition, but they also wrote and played historical and contemporary songs from the South-West.  Some of these, in particular songs of the timber industry,  were commissioned by and played on ABC radio.

Loaded Dog succeeded them in the twenty-first century and played similar and their own later material, at Fairbridge, Nannup and the National Folk Festivals.  Many of the songs were written and recorded in Margaret River.  They produced four CD’s.

In this outing they will take a tour of Oz, starting and ending in Margaret River, reprising some of this material.  Phil Roeterdenk will play guitar and use his rich voice to good effect, Alan Mann will play open-tuned jarrah guitar and banjo, and Dave Mann will display his many talents on mandolin and pedal steel.

About Young@HEART

The Young@HEART music program is held at Margaret River HEART every Monday morning from 10am to 11am. The program does not run on public holidays or when there is another major event in the foyer.

The initiative was developed to safely encourage participation in the arts among older residents (over 60s) during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to high interest, the free performances have since been opened to people of all ages. Nonetheless, the senior demographic still makes up the majority of the audience.

Young@Heart is broadcast live on Radio Margaret River
