You Are the One is a heartfelt children’s book inspired by the Di Gee Dreaming Song, crafted to nurture empathy, unity, and kindness in young readers. Through gentle storytelling and vibrant illustrations, it encourages children to stand up against bullying, celebrate diversity, and embrace compassion in their daily lives.
Unlike traditional songbooks, this interactive experience invites children to first explore the story alongside their parents or caregivers. A QR code at the end of the book provides access to a digital version of the song, allowing families to listen and sing along together, reinforcing the book’s messages through music.
Designed primarily for primary-aged children, the book’s narrative fosters discussions about kindness and racial unity. For younger audiences, such as toddlers and preschoolers, parents can focus on reading the song lyrics aloud before enjoying the accompanying digital song, making it adaptable for various age groups.
You Are the One is more than just a book—it’s a tool for families and educators to inspire meaningful conversations and promote a culture of empathy and inclusivity among children.
Di Gee is a West Australian visual artist and musician who has been creating and sharing her love of art and music for many years. In 1985, she and her husband opened Crafty Creations in Nannup—the town’s first gallery—supporting over 120 local artists and craftspeople during its 20 years of operation.
Di’s creativity flows through many forms, from painting native animals on handmade clothing to sculpting birds and animals from wire while travelling across Australia. She has taught art and jewellery-making to both kids and adults, always encouraging others to explore their creative side.
Music has also been a lifelong passion. Di picked up the guitar as a teenager and has since learned piano, cello, violin, and ukulele. She has worked as a kidsnmusic educator, assisted with babies and toddlers Suzuki music classes in Margaret River, and collaborated with a music therapist—deepening her understanding of music’s healing and connecting power.
In 2015, she wrote the Di Gee Dreaming Song, a heartfelt tune about unity and kindness. Inspired by a fellow songwriter and TAFE lecturer, she created her first children’s book, You Are the One, blending her love of music, art, and storytelling.
Di now lives in Margaret River, where she continues to create, teach, and bring joy through the arts.
